Chapter 6 Knowledge Claims

America's culture was changed in 1981 when MTV was launched. Also the book says MTV has drawn a lot of fire for eroding of morals and traditions in America (215-216).

Cable has given America a choice when it comes to what we watch on television. Since cable has come out such networks like ABC, NBC, CBS, and FOX aren't the only game in town. People were willing to pay more money for more programming. In my opinion Cable has given a voice to a diverse audience. People can go and watch BET, Univision, Spike, or Lifetime. The Television Industry has figured out that people will pay for niche programming.

Chapter 5 Knowledge ClaimsThe first

The first TV transmission was first sent by Philo Farnsworth in 1927 (pg. 160). Ever since then we all have been subjected to vast amounts of images. One event the book talks about is the September 11 terror attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.

The book also mentions that since the 1960's, Americans find TV news more trustworthy than print news (168).

TV is full of powerful images. Television sometimes shapes the way we think about things, we get up to the second information, and television inevitably shapes our culture.

Chapter 4 Knowledge Claims

The Radio Act of 1927 created the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) its jurisdiction covers the internet, television and cable. (pg.131)

Satellite Radio can sidestep FCC regulations (pg.150).

Satellite Radio expects to have 20 million subscribers in 2010 (151).

The government has come down hard on "shock jocks" in recent years. Before going to satellite radio Howard Stern was fined thousands of dollars in what the government found was inappropriate topics on the radio. Doesn't this constitute a breach in the first amendment?
